For Tintinophiles, 2025 will begin under the sign of China, with the publication of the the Blue Lotus<\/i>and a new biography of Tchang Tchong-Jen by Dominique Maricq and Tchang Yifei, the sculptor's daughter. The Herg\u00e9 Museum will also be staging an exhibition on the same subject. A good pretext to return here to the participation of Chang in the fifth opus of the Adventures of Tintin<\/i>.<\/b><\/p>

In 1932, Herg\u00e9 announced the departure of Tintin and Snowy for a long journey that would take them to the Middle East and Asia, with Shanghai as the destination. Abb\u00e9 L\u00e9on Gosset, chaplain to Chinese Catholic students in Belgium, was a reader of Petit Vingti\u00e8me<\/i> and the adventures of the reporter with the quiff. He contacted Herg\u00e9, begging him not to use stereotypes of Asians. In March 1934, Tintin's father, who had just completed Cigars of the Pharaoh<\/i> and prepares The Blue Lotus<\/i>met Abb\u00e9 Gosset in Louvain. Gosset gave him the address of Tchang Tchong-Jen, a Chinese man his own age who had come to study painting and sculpture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.<\/p>

Chang was slow to reply to Herg\u00e9's letters. He finally decided to write to him on 25 April. An appointment was made for Tuesday 1er<\/sup> May at 5pm at the cartoonist's home in Schaerbeek, on the outskirts of Brussels. This meeting was a revelation for Herg\u00e9. For several weeks, the two men met every Sunday. Their discussions revolved around art, Eastern thought and the political situation in China. Avoiding clich\u00e9s, The Blue Lotus<\/i> will be a milestone in the Tintin saga and in Herg\u00e9's personal development.<\/p>

Tchang Tchong-Jen finished his studies at the Beaux-Arts in the summer of 1935. Herg\u00e9 missed his departure from the Gare du Nord in Brussels: he ran after the train on which his Chinese friend had boarded, without managing to catch up with him. He barely caught a glimpse of the traveller leaning out of his compartment window. A missed farewell.<\/p>

They had promised to meet again one day. Separated by geographical distance, with no news of each other because of the upheavals in the world, Tchang Tchong-Jen and Georges Remi did not meet again until 1981, in Brussels. The creator of Tintin, weakened by illness, died two years later.<\/p>

\"I had other things on my mind, I forgot\".<\/i><\/b><\/p>

The Herg\u00e9-Chang encounter has been recounted a thousand times, but is well known to Tintin fans, who are also aware that the Chinese sculptor drew ideograms here and there in the plates of the the Blue Lotus<\/i>.<\/p>

In autumn 1985, however, Tchang Tchong-Jen made a new revelation during a visit to France. Almost officially invited by Jack Lang, Minister of Culture, and R\u00e9gis Debray, he agreed to give a series of lectures on Chinese art in Paris. The media flocked to interview this character straight out of the albums of Tintin<\/i>. When asked about The Blue Lotus<\/i>In 1935, Tchang stated that he had refused to co-sign the album as Herg\u00e9 had suggested, for fear of unfortunate consequences. However, he had found a way of hiding his name for all eternity in the album. He told France Inter on 7 September 1985: \"I signed it on page 55, in the corner, in a drawing. And the other is on page 45, also on a panel at the back, in a green colour. After that, I had other things to do, I forgot. For half a century, I never thought about it again.<\/i> Delighted to have been reminded of the existence of these cameos<\/i> calligraphy, Chiang is quick to repeat the anecdote to the other journalists.<\/p>

In 2007, Yifei Tchang was commissioned by the literary magazine Read<\/i> in response to a reader. She confirms what her late father (who died in 1998) said: \"I'm talking about my father's signature, the real Tchang, who left his mark on the album. <\/i>The Blue Lotus. \" <\/i>As well as the two boxes pointed out by Tchong-Jen, she spotted two other vignettes on pages 40 and 46.<\/p>

Yes, but... father and daughter referred to the 62-page colour album published in 1946. Edgar P. Jacobs took part in the reworking of this episode (as colourist), but not Tchang Tchong-Jen, who was on the other side of the world at the time!<\/p>

So you have to open the black and white volume, published in 1936. Surprise: Chiang Chong-Jen's name does not appear on plates 80, 90 and 91 (which correspond to pages 40, 45 and 46 of the colour edition). Only plate 110 bears his half-signature, on the facade of a warehouse. It is almost certainly in Chang's hand: he had time to insert it into the story before leaving Belgium in 1935. And it was Herg\u00e9 who wrote the name of his Chinese friend three times - partially - during the reassembling of the story in colour. the Blue Lotus<\/i>. Did he know the meaning of these ideograms at the time? He couldn't remember, in any case, when he conceived Tintin in Tibet<\/i> at the end of the 1950s: as the most knowledgeable Tintinophiles know, one of the characters engraved in the rock (page 30) is wrong... Unless the paper Chang, whose first name is different, wasn't the one who actually lived!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
